Your first task is to find all of the wall studs. A wall stud is basically the support beam for the wall and it is the sturdiest part. You want to locate them because it is within these studs that you are going to place your nails. If you nail wall shelves up into the drywall without bothering to nail into the studs they are going to fall down and break everything.
To locate your wall studs simply knock gently on the wall until you come to a point that sounds solid rather than hollow. You can also use a sophisticated stud finder if you want. Once the studs have been found use your level, a pencil, and a piece of wood to draw a straight line between two of the studs. This line represents your shelf.
How to Get the Job Done:
Once the prep work is completed and you have all of the materials in place all you have to do is start putting up the shelves. To do this, simply nail the brackets you bought into the studs so that they form a support for your wooden shelf. Once enough brackets are put up (depending on the size of the shelf you will need more than two) you can rest the wooden slabs on top of them.
